Sharath Kamal Achanta is an Indian professional table tennis player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest table tennis players ever produced by the country. He won the ‘Gold’ medal at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games in the men’s singles and the men’s team events, the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games (men’s doubles), the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (men’s team), and the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games (men’s singles, mixed doubles, and men’s team). He had clinched the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the men’s doubles event, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (men’s doubles), and the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games (men’s doubles). Sharath had also secured the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games in the men’s singles and the men’s team events, the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (men’s singles), the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games (men’s team and mixed doubles), and the 2021 Doha Asian Table Tennis Championships (men’s team and men’s doubles). For his services to table tennis, the Government of India honored him with the Arjuna Award (the 2nd-highest sporting honor in India) in 2004 and the Padma Shri (the 4th-highest civilian honor in India) in 2019.

  • Sharath was introduced to table tennis by his father when he was just 4 years old. His father, along with his uncle Muralidhar Rao, used to teach him the nuances of the sport.
  • They used to train him before and after school, every day. By the time he turned 16, Sharath had started participating in state-level competitions.
  • He holds the record of being the first Indian table tennis player ever to have won the senior national championship 10 times, surpassing the previous record of 8 titles held by Kamlesh Mehta.
  • In August 2007, he became the first Indian to win the Pyongyang Invitational Tournament. It was the 21st edition of the tournament.
  • In 2010, when Sharath won the Egypt Open, he became the first Indian to ever win a singles title on the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation) Pro Tour. At the same event, he also captained the Indian men’s team to the team title by defeating hot favorites and 9-time champions England.
