The Athletic last week revealed that Leeds United also retain at interest in Phillips, who is under contract at Anfield until 2025.

The 26-year-old has played 29 times for Liverpool since making his debut in 2020 but was limited to just five appearances in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side in 2022-23.

Phillips spent most of the 2019-20 season on loan at second tier German outfit Stuttgart before helping Bournemouth win promotion from the Championship in 2021-22.

Last summer Benfica wanted to take him on a season-long loan and there were also approaches from Bournemouth, Burnley and Southampton. However, he ultimately stayed put due to the club’s defensive injury problems.

It was a similar story in January when Galatasaray and a number of German clubs explored a possible deal before an injury to Ibrahima Konate led to Klopp keeping him as cover until the end of the season.
